It was actually a Feb. 65--just during the transition to CBS, so it was still a Blackface and was still the AB763 circuit. No reverb unfortunately except through my friend's Blackface Twin. |
Awesome! You know why I asked the reverb, cause surf without reverb is like shoes without soles.

Oh yes, definitely! It's true, I couldn't *truly* nail the surf sound sans reverb with my Bandmaster--though that Fender reverb unit looked *pretty* tempting! I did see a silverface Bandmaster at the vintage guitar store that had a reverb tank, but eww, who wants a silverface (unless it's modded back to AB763 specs)?

I've heard of them on a guitar forum, but never checked them out. They look pretty good! I've heard the brown Princetons are a hidden gem with a couple of cap changes.

That's one freakin loud combination. Even the 50W. 50W vs. 100W is like goddamn loud vs. a tiny bit louder. What stadium will you play at?
Anyway, the DSL will give you a tight strident big clear AC/DC to metal sound anytime. The harshness seem to go away when you really turn it up (basically when your eardrums start to bleed). Or you can build yourself a 18W ("Bluesbreaker"). Almost as jangly as a VOX, yet still creamy, and you can get the higher gain rock tones at full volume.

Ha! Yes, I know, it is friggin loud. Here's the thing. I just joined up with a pretty loud band. The other guitarist plays a Hot Rod Deville and all I had was my trusty-though-solidstate Tech21 TM60. It couldn't hold a candle to the rest of the band volume. And the singer has a brand-spankin' new DSL50 sitting there--"If you like it you can buy it, I only bought it b/c I thought I'd be playing on some songs but I'm not now that you're here". Hrmm...
Agreed that the 50W is *plenty* loud. The 100W is just insanity. I keep reading that a proper retube and rebias smooths things out a lot, even to the point of being able to run the amp much quieter w/o losing tone. I do know I like being able to hear myself when we practice (but then again, I practice wearing earplugs, so...)
It's the tone I'm going for though. 18W Bluesbreaker huh? That's the model Jim Marshall built for Eric Clapton wasn't it? How close is the Bluesbreaker sound to the Plexi sound? (I know squat about Marshall history!)

That's true. Pure tone has to be spot-on first. But a juicy reverb and a nice warbly trem sounds heavenly though, especially on slower songs. Eventually I'm sure I'll end up with no pedals and one overdrive knob--the volume control on my guitar.

Let's see, that'd be early Marshall, early Vox, tweed Fender and blackface Fender. Yep, pretty much covers the gamut.

LOL! Have fun, man. But tell the band to TURN DOWN (cut the drummer's heavy hands) and let the PA play to the audience. Hearing loss is a bad, bad thing.

Thanks, Eric! I learned "Sweet Dreams" from Roy Buchanan's record, but Jim Campilongo plays a nice version, too. Volume pot rawkz!

Ha! Yes, yes, I take my hearing pretty seriously. The high-freq. filter earplugs are perfect. Cuts out the high SPL but you can still hear talking quite well.
Good video on Hedges! Amazing technique.
The more guitar I learn, the more I realize I have a loooong road ahead of me. It's a deep instrument indeed.

The major labels now look for marketability (appearance) before talent. With today's electronics, they can easily fix any lack of talent, as was shown in the video. Now I ask you all honestly, don't most of you know a player or a band somewhere, who really sounds great all on their own, and they sure don't need electronic "fixes", and yet you know that they will never go anywhere because they don't have "the look"?
It also tells a lot about people. They started to believe that this "plastic" music is good, because the music industry said so. Just like when they started to believe in God, 'cause church - "religion industry" - said so. With Kyle's © words, they are afraid to "be themselves". They let themselves being supervised.

But it sure makes you appreciate it when you hear an old Ella Fitzgerald recording, to realize just what a fantastic singer she really was, and what a command of pitch she wielded.

Haha, yes, I have it too. The sad thing is it's quite audible... well, lots of "famous" voices out there would not do the job live. Fortunately (hehe...) they can now use these gadgets in live conditions. My point was: they do it, alright. But you buy it!
