There are a lot of musicians here. I figured this would make a great topic. I'm not very knowledgeable in this area of interest but I hope I'll learn something.

Do you guys have favorite scales? Do you have favorite chord progressions to produce certain emotions?

Favorite Genres? What is it about the composition of the music you enjoy?

Equipment? I have a Stratocaster and I use my computer as an amp Very Happy

VSTi plugins rock Wink

Great topic indeed!

Favorite scales: major, dorian (it's so celtic! Smile)
Favorite chords: sus2, sus4
I don't have favorite progressions, but I tend to like songs that sustain the subdominant (IV), and I dig modulations.
Too much minor makes me want to puke; overusing minor chords and scales is a cheap and repulsive way to get an emotional effect.

Favorite genre: anything that moves me, be it country, bluegrass, folk, jazz, blues, baroque, rock, pop, reggae... I'm listening to Robert Cray right now.

Main guitar is a Squier Standard Fat Tele (her name is Cassie), main amp is a Roland Cube 30 (it really does anything I want), and I have a single ended tube amp that was originally a VIDEOTON tube radio, (but I modded the heck out of it and put it in an cab with an 8'' speaker - basically something like a Champ - with a VOX tone stack! Smile)

VSTi plug-ins: AmpliTube was o.k., but Guitar Rig 2 is awesome!

(Some blues I played.)

It all depends what you wanna turn into.

Just always imagine something cooler than you can actually play.
That way, you'll always be getting better and closer to your own idea of what sounds cool.

I play a Taylor 6-string. Had her for about 5 years...she's my baby.

Favorite Chord: maj7 almost every time. Talk about calming and resolved... I love it. But a dom7 gives plenty of tension when necessary too.

Favorite Scale: Hmm, lately I've really hooked on the harmonic minor because it's just so middle-eastern sounding! Also, though it's so overused, it's hard to beat a good ol' pentatonic over nearly anything. Use the major pentatonic for happy feel-good songs, or kick into the minor pentatonic for some killer rock or blues. The copious use of minor pentatonic used on Pearl Jam's "Ten" album and the blues scale on old Delta Blues tracks were the single most motivating factors for wanting to learn guitar at such an early age. Smile

For me, playing alone and playing with other musicians give a totally different vibe. I prefer playing with other musicians because then it becomes a conversation of musicality. Playing alone is great too, but is more like a monologue. The dynamics between musicians that are really tight is just amazing though--such a rush to experience it. Even amazing to observe it! (Listen to Coltrane or Davis recordings to get a huge dose of this dynamic).

Good thread!

Words to live by! I'm focusing on modes at the moment.

I really like the sus chords. I like maj7 because it is mellow. I've been messing with min(+5) today. Augmented and Diminished chords have a disturbing sound to them. I always enjoy the ring of unison.

I just got Guitar Rig 2.. I need to install. Native Instruments rocks!

Do you have a preference for BPM and meters?

Pearl Jam and Nirvana got me interested in playing the guitar. I haven't listened to Davis and Coltrane in awhile. I'm not sure I have the album where they both are on it.

Lol, funny that you mention that...

I think any good song could be translated to sound cool over almost any tempo (if yer good enough to play it)...
Regardless, letting music breathe is quite important.
A static tempo is not human.

You are so Human. Smile

It was The Beatles' "Please Please Me" album that got me hooked on guitar.

When it comes to BPM, it depends on the genre. I like 120-160 in 4/4 for rock, 140-230 for bluegrass or swing, but love the slow 12/8 blues shuffle, or the moderate tempo "one drop" in reggae.
Not a big fan of asymmetric meters, but I do like Brubeck's "Take Five" or Pink Floyd's "Money".

The most famous Miles-Coltrane album is "Kind Of Blue". I prefer their Cookin', Workin', Steamin' and Relaxin' albums though. Feels like Miles was in a better shape at that time.

Just made a quick "demo" with Guitar Rig 2's Twin Amp model, (forgive the clams Smile): http://www.freefilehosting.net/download/MTkxMDQ4

(Based on the Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling" progression.)

I'm partial to "Milestones" myself.

I don't really know anything about all this guitar stuff you guys are talking about... I play the trumpet and the French horn, and I don't think I could live without my brass! Very Happy

As far as chords go, I'm a fan of diminished chords. I also like the tritone for it's "out there" sound.

I think assymetrical meters (5/4, 7/8, etc.) are a lot of fun to play. I like messing around with all the different ways you can subdivide the beat patterns to make different sounds...

Excellent idea, YofterMofter!
Nice quiet background....
I really your turnaround at 41-43 seconds.

My mic in front of my amp wasn't on for some reason,
so the room mic is what picked it up.

Conn_man,
I used to play trumpet/cornet, but never tried french horn.
Which is easier for you, french horn, or trumpet?

Trumpet by a mile! The French horn is one of the most temperamental instruments in the entire orchestra. On the trumpet you can pretty much just blow (with some control of course) and the overtones are far enough apart that slight variables can still hit the same note. The overtones on the French horn are so close together that the slightest inconsistency in air or embouchure can produce a splatty tone, a "frack", or even a completely different pitch.

Despite all of that (or perhaps because of it?) I still find the French horn to be the more fulfilling of the two to play. The horn has a much nobler sounding tone, not as strident as the trumpet, and can be used to denote everything from terror to romance to wild heroics in programmatic music. Also, there's a sensation when you're playing a really good soaring horn part, the kind that just flies out over the orchestra, that I've never been able to match.

Funny you should ask these things.

I have a dream of creating music using everyday objects to mimic the sounds of professional instruments. For example, I can create a rubber band harp by stretching some rubber over half a tin can. The sound is actually quite good and is somewhere between a zylophone and a stringed instrument.

My voice always is just off key, so the rubberbands will work nicely.

There are other instruments and sounds which make up my day that I would like to include in the piece as well. Birds that sound make a saw sound, and other thumps and bumps.

The song I'd like to sing to it all is 'Goodbye Girl' by the UK Squeeze.

One day I will do it. I will collect all the sounds and mix them together quite literally in a rubber band, and then add my voice.

I think Goodbye Girl is one of the few songs that work beautifully with a voice that is totally off scale. Very Happy
