It just aggravates me because I know for a fact, since I've done alot of research (because that's just me ;P), that there are at LEAST 30 subgenres of metal + Metal w/ Punk influences that have recently emerged in this past era. So how can anybody compile 30+ genres of music into one simple "Screamo" title? (They certainly CAN; iTunes has done a great job of labeling EVERY punk band Alternative and EVERY Rock/Metal band Rock.)
And no, they absolutely don't sound the same. Go listen to any screamo song and compare it to (careful how I word this) "any metal band who has not taken in the majority of it's influences from punk". If you've done your research, you'd know that by saying that, I include some mainstream metal genres such as Metalcore, nu-metal, etc. in that description, which may not always prove to be the STRONGEST argument against another Screamo song; though it certainly wouldn't lose. Anyway, the vocal differences will be apparent regardless of which bands you choose, some more obvoius than others but that's beside the point. Screamo vocals don't always sound the same, but are usually performed with the same technique, whereas Metal vocals again have a bit of leeway and variety depending on the genre as well as the band, and are usually lower in comparision to some Screamo bands (who seldom use low growling vocals).
And obviously I'm biased, but i'll try to keep this last point as factual as possible. Take any popular Screamo band e.g. Silverstein, and compare it to a popular metal band e.g. Children of Bodom/Cannibal Corpse/all 80's thrash/etc. Lyrical differences in the songs are almost always evident in that Screamo lyrics usually deal more with depression/love while Metal lyrics have a variety (some genres may have more variety than others, but regardless, there's still a variety). Is this true for every Screamo v.s. Metal band comparision? I won't say yes or no, since I honestly don't know the answer to that and I won't sound ignorant; but for the majority? Yes.
I've tried to keep this as un-biased towards Metal as possible but oh well, we all slip here and there defending something we're passionate about .
Just thought I'd comment. _________________

So, Mikkle. Was there a correlation? (I'm guessing no.)
By the way, Rocky didn't post but he's ISTP and likes The Mars Volta. |

"We were too punk for the metal clubs and too metal for the punk ones."
(oh, italics say that you have!)
Silverstein isn't screamo
To the underlined: THAT IS BECAUSE iTUNES IS COMMERCIAL GARBAGE

My music playlist has a lot of alternative rock in it and a few songs by Utada Hikaru which I'm sure she is some kind of pop _________________ School is over, the fun begins

You should just memorize your favorite songs and be able to play them back on command. _________________

I think it does to an extent. I am a 38yr old female who is ISTJ. I have always loved electronica. Through the years I have changed my interest in sub-genres of electronica- Trance to Techno to breakbeat to drum n bass to ambient to acidjazz and downtempo. Like most ISTJs, I prefer organization and routine- and most of this genre is repetitive or at least organized beats, etc. But I am also a person who hears the music first and the lyrics later- or is this a rt/left hemisphere discussion?.
But I listen to all kinds of music. I just always revert back to really enjoying electronica. |
