Has anyone heard of emotional intelligence by daniel goleman and multiple
intelligences by I believe Gardner? I am grateful that books like these and
others are like a wake up call to society! We need to acknowledge the right
side of the brain and its contributions to the world! Emotional intelligence
shows how we can COMMUNICATE in a more humane and human way. We
are all interrelated! We need to apparently LEARN how to talk! The way that
we have learned thus far in the home life, media, and the school systems
thus far are inadequate too say the least. Thus far we live in a left side of
the brain society! We need to more fully heal and begin to offer a plausible
way to usher in a possibility of a more fully healed and less fractured society
and world. There needs to be an organization and grass roots movements to
demand that our school systems help teach us to be more fully human.
We need to acknowledge that we really are interrelated. We need to start
using our right brain as well as left so that we have the possibility of being
more whole, complete, happy, peaceful, and more self aware!

I read two thirds of his book, and only out of severe bordom. I think it would of been a awesome book for a 14 year old who knows next to nothing, would of been fantastic. You can gleam much of what he says from his articles.

WHy is the damn fire department going all day when it's been drizzling all day?

Actually both Subjectivity (MBTI Feeling) and Objectivity (MBTI Thinking) are right-hemisphere phenomena. The left hemisphere has nothing to do with it.

So what kind of left-brained logic and objectivity causes vast segments of the population to idolize pop "stars" like Britney Spears; to consume ever increasing quantities of junk food; to retain the attention span of a two-year-old; or to rack up credit card debt by spending like there is no tomorrow? If anything, schools need to teach more critical thinking and basic reasoning. This is not entirely left-brained, but relies upon large doses of the rational, objective, and analytical thinking usually associated with the left brain.

if humanity doesn't start using and valuing the right brain hemisphere more often, i feel quite certain it/they/us will become & or be replaced by machines. more perspective/an idea of the big picture and heart is needed now. facts, sequence, numbers and such are only so much. a human requires more than this (i.e. for humanity to continue and thrive). yes, i firmly believe this...and yes i have said it before in many different ways.

For those with anger problems and to help solve conflicts on the work force,
at school, between a boss and his employees, anyone who works in the social
arena, and at home between both spouse's and their children, emotional
intelligence works.
You just have to be willing to listen, and not be right al the time!

As I mentioned on the Children thread, emotional intelligence training run amok:

http://www.boston.com/jobs/globe/climb/archives/111305.shtml

In MBTI parlance, this author and her ilk seem to want to convert IT types into EF types, much as teachers in the 1950's tried to convert left-handed children into right-handed.

As always, Romana, balance.
Romana, I do believe that we lacking in the development of thought, reason,
compassion, empathy and other components to make us humans more
humane!
I welcome your insights.
I think of you as my balance. I know that I am INFP, idealist, DREAMER.
I dream of a society that is better, because I know so much potential, is
there. I'd be willing to learn a whole gauntlet of courses, if it would
contribute to a better, healthier society. Maybe i'm to mixed up!
C. Beck asks how I can jump from the more realist stance, then to the
metaphysical side of humanity. I am generalizing, but let's say 50% of
us are either thinker or feeler!
It does not make sense for us to war with ourselves.
I am generalizing, there are 50% democrat and 50% republican. It does
not make sense to blame each other!

Your idea of balance is valid. The question lies mainly in trying to achieve that balance. Must it be achieved within each individual? Must each of us become equally good at everything? This would create a world of jacks-of-all-trades, with no one able to focus on their strengths sufficiently to become good at anything.

I find it more effective to recognize my weaknesses, perhaps develop some minimum proficiency there, and then achieve the necessary balance by working with someone like yourself who has complementary gifts.

It is fine to dream about a better world; if we cannot envision it, we cannot create it. But unless we do, in fact, create it, we are merely deluding ourselves. It is important to achieve the improvements we can, even if we never reach the perfection of our dreams. Another expression of, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" perhaps.

I believe in individuality.
I believe all 16 sub types of us "live in different realities", with
different wants, desires, wishes, attributes etc.
I want each of our talents (sub types) acknowledged and helped along with
even special attention to detail training.
In this way I want our natural gifts enhanced and not changed.
In your "CHILDREN" response, you said that we are individuals and that
we should be respected as such.
Also that not a one size fit all educational system be shoved down all the
student's throats.
I want our individuality acknowledged.
I want desperately for all of us to reach our potential.
As always I respect and like your response. It is very stimulating.
(intellectually). Also believe it or not I agree with most of what you say.
Sometimes it is semantics and a difficulty to exactly express what it is I wish to
share.

Does overcompensating in life bring happiness?
In trying to achieve control over our lives and our self & our environment,
do we thus LOSE "CONTROL" and are in a sense possessed?
How else do we fill a void, that we sense, and thus drives us?
Drives us seeking happiness, contentment, & fulfillment.

Our we chasing willo the wisps?
What is the answer to being happy?
Balance.

I sometimes find greatest fulfillment and happiness in intensity. I cannot understand how some people seem to go through life never giving anything their all. Even balance must be had in moderation, else one lives a bland, vanilla life, just nibbling at the edges of experience.

What is it to transcend and be above the cares and worries of mortal men?
One could say that is not to be human!

What if one could transcend to such a level and still be very human as well
as understanding?
Would we listen to this person's wisdom. No.
Because we all have to swim and cross the river of adversity that is called
life, to learn it's VALUABLE lessons first hand.

Emotional intelligence is instead of fighting needlessly, uselessly, and in an
unproductive way on the "surface", to instead go to a DEEPER, truer
emotional "reality".
This was my original premise.
Now it is a "shared" universe of both thoughts and emotions.
It is UNDERSTANDING the other person's "intentionality".
And to get past name calling and being "RULED" by our emotional
and primitive brain.
