You're right about the replicability eliminating the effect of variation in samples, as it does in human samples. Which makes sense for the purpose of what they're testing, but I guess my issue was more with the presumptive sense of homogeneity that animals in science (of the same strain and so on) are seen to have, when at a human scale, we largely tend to focus on variation and differences.

Lab rats and mice are actually bred to be as nearly identical as possible, precisely to ensure consistency in experiments. Some studies have found, however, that the "homogenized" test animals differ enough from "normal" rats and mice, that the results of the experiments can not always reliably be generalized to other rats and mice. Consistency at the expense of relevance.

So they need to make a questionnaire for the rats and mice so we can divide them by personality before testing. mm. Which flavor of cheese do you prefer?

Hmm, I'm going with Camembert for introversion, Cheddar for extraversion. Smile

Normal cat is kinda stupid, and we cut his nuts off- extrovert cat (mine) is female and super smart and can open doors and move things larger than her own body weight, and I decided not to fix her for that reason, wanting to create a race of supercats.

Introvert cat was abused by it's previous owners, tail chopped off, nise half eaten away, hip, ribs, and leg broken, and a fear of the male human.... so he is usually terrified of me uless I catch him and then start massaging him- or am eating something.... he only has three theeth, canines, and I have to chew food I give him up.

I leave my bedroom window open for smart can and 'noraml' cat, which I should rename dumb cat.... smart cat sits in it, dumb cat does too, broken introvert cat too afraid to approach my room to, and the one time he did he nearly fell out of it. I fully expect neutered dumbcat to fall out of it someday... but it's his life, and he must be given the chance to ruin it or end it, the worst tyranny is the denial of death and desires from micromanagement. Smartcat will never fall, but her genetic line must be put to the window test as well.

Dumbcat caught a bee in his mouth, and kept it in there, letting it go, and recatching it. He has been strung before, and I think recently when he did it, was tung again. My smart cat stays away from bees, but hunts everything else. She climbs chain link fences... dumb cat does not.

Two days ago, I had him outside for a few moments (dumbcat) to explore backyard and see his brother the outside stray... a bird learning to fly fell from a tree and landed near him, he walked right past it, and left it alone, looking for it. I was going to let eveolution take it's course with the bird, figuring it avoided detection.... but I thought it had twisted wing, and so put dumb cat RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BIRD.... he stuck his nose out to it's beak- the bird hit him with the beak, and then flew away!

Smart cat watched from the window. Broken introvert cat was hiding somewhere.

Study finds animals have personality

Fish have personalities. Ordinary Canadian brook trout exhibit different traits: some social, others not. Some risk-takers, others scaredy-fish. And so on.

I ought to observe fish pets a little better...
