Using MEAN to determine Enneagram Type

Haxis = love/power scale

Vaxis = mind/instinct scale

What is the point of Hmean and Vmean?

The rational of this test is that all nine Enneagram types are interelated and they all fall somewhere on two scales (axii), a horizontal the love/power scale (axis) (eight behavior is more about power and two behavior is more about love) and a vertical mind/instinct scale (axis) (five behavior is more about being led by the mind and nine behavior is more about being led by instinct/gut). Calculating Hmean and Vmean, where you fall within these scales based on your type scores, draws on that logic and determines your overall behavior pattern/type (which I call your mean type).

How is Hmean and Vmean calculated?

A standard mean formula is applied to your results of type specific questions which are weighted based on the Haxis and Vaxis geometric positions of each type point on the enneacircle.

How is mean type determined from Hmean and Vmean?

Your Hmean and Vmean are plotted on the Enneagram map to show where you are on average. To give an analogy if you vote half the time as an extreme democrat and half the time as an extreme republican, your mean would suggest that overall you are a moderate (even if you have never voted for a moderate candidate). Likewise, if you behave half the time as a four and the other half as a two (exaggerated hypothetical) this test would likely plot you as a three overall (even if you scored low on specific three behavior). Many people don't see the overall sum of their actions so they may identify with their more pronounced type (aka main type) but in their behavior they may act like another type entirely.

Why is the Five at the top of the enneacircle?

Type Five is the most mental type and, in my opinion, is balanced on the love/power scale. I entertained putting 4w5/5w4 at the top (which would be the conventional Enneagram circle upside down) but it is neither the most mental type nor balanced between love/power in my current opinion.

The RHETI scored me as Type X and you score me as Type Y what gives?

Additionally, this test determines your main type (your most pronounced enneagram behavior) which should be similar to what you get on other Enneagram tests that yield main type. This test also determines your "variant". This is the only test, I am aware of, which generates variant results. Variant classification accounts for the influence of the other eight behaviors types. I find it inferior to mean type in this respect, but mean typing is new and all Enneagram authors still use the variant system. So when reading other Enneagram literature you should refer to your respective main type and variant description.

What is Omni type?

I invented the Omni type to account for people who don't have a stand out mean type. As they are balanced in all nine behaviors, the 1-9 type descriptions don't generally apply to them.

Finally, no test, including this one, is totally accurate but I am always gathering and analyzing data to make sure the tests here are as accurate as possible.
