How do personality scores differ between people in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties and sixties? These comparisons cover all 38 core questionnaire dimensions, with men and women shown separately so that changing gender proportions do not create apparent age trends.
103,554profiles aged 20-69
38questionnaire dimensions
5ten-year age groups
Historical tests: April 26, 2008 to October 19, 2011. Aggregate-only extraction; no names, contact details or individual answers exported.
Age differences are not necessarily aging effects. Each age group contains different people. Generational experiences, who used Facebook, and who chose this test may all contribute. A higher average is not a better or more desirable personality.
The Largest Age-Group Differences
The six charts below are selected by the largest absolute twenties-to-sixties standardized difference in either gender in a fixed discovery half of the data. Full-sample means are plotted; the separate holdout half is reported below as a consistency check.
Age runs horizontally in each panel. Blue circles represent men; red squares represent women. All panels use the same 0-100 score scale. Whiskers are approximate 95% intervals for each mean, not the spread of individual people.
Self-rated excess weight
Men average 39.1 in their twenties and 55.2 in their sixties (+16.1 points; +0.64 cohort SD). Women average 45.0 and 63.3 (+18.3 points; +0.69 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
Thrill seeking
Men average 52.7 in their twenties and 42.7 in their sixties (-10.0 points; -0.49 cohort SD). Women average 45.9 and 31.8 (-14.1 points; -0.68 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
Distress at being ignored
Men average 44.8 in their twenties and 39.0 in their sixties (-5.7 points; -0.29 cohort SD). Women average 46.1 and 33.0 (-13.1 points; -0.65 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
Religious faith
Men average 41.9 in their twenties and 49.1 in their sixties (+7.3 points; +0.24 cohort SD). Women average 45.2 and 60.1 (+14.9 points; +0.50 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
Desire to be different
Men average 56.6 in their twenties and 49.3 in their sixties (-7.3 points; -0.39 cohort SD). Women average 56.3 and 46.6 (-9.7 points; -0.51 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
Desire for children / family
Men average 55.0 in their twenties and 59.0 in their sixties (+3.9 points; +0.19 cohort SD). Women average 59.6 and 70.0 (+10.4 points; +0.47 cohort SD). The intervening decades are shown in the chart and full table, rather than assumed to follow a straight line.
1 contrasts in men and 4 in women meet the descriptive substantial-gap screen: at least 0.50 whole-gender-cohort SD overall, at least 0.40 SD in each half, and consistent direction. These counts concern the twenties-to-sixties contrasts only; all estimates appear below regardless of whether they pass.
Twenties-to-sixties contrasts for every trait
First two numeric columns: score-point gap / whole-cohort SD gap. Last two: discovery / holdout SD gap. Positive means higher scores in the sixties group.

Where Are the Biggest Adjacent-Decade Gaps?
Endpoints can hide curves or plateaus. These are the strongest adjacent-decade differences across all 38 traits and both genders, ranked by the discovery-half absolute standardized gap. One contrast per trait is shown to avoid repeating the same dimension. Smaller groups in later decades make their estimates less stable.

These are differences between group means, not the amount an individual changes over ten years. The holdout check uses the same historical source and is not an external replication.

Coverage. This uses all retained profiles in the age range, not the balanced 30,000-men/30,000-women export. Each decade has at least 200 people in each gender, with at least 80 in each split half. The sixties group has only 223 men and 387 women, so it should be read more cautiously than the much larger twenties group. Ages 18-19 and 70-80 are outside the requested decade charts; the latter also has insufficient male coverage.
Approximate age. Age is the calendar year of the stored test date minus recorded birth year. It can be about a year different from exact age. Some birth years may have been inferred from graduation information; the data do not identify which. The stored test date can represent a retake, while profile metadata may have been collected or updated at a different time.
Measures. The database stores calculated trait scores, not completed item answers. These 38 dimensions mix personality preferences with self-ratings such as wealth, attractiveness and excess weight. They are not objective income, attractiveness or body-mass measurements. Intellectual interests is not an IQ test; competence/superiority is not a diagnosis. The original attractiveness content partly refers to opposite-sex attention. The separate height, same-gender-attraction and music items are outside these 38 dimensions.
Filtering and denominators. Retained profiles have a test date on or after April 26, 2008, all 41 stored scores in 0-100, at least one score different from the all-50 default, recorded male/female metadata, and approximate age 20-69. Male/female are the only recorded gender categories available here. A stored profile, rather than a test attempt, is the unit of analysis; retake history is not available in this extract.
Estimation. Means, sample standard deviations and mean intervals come directly from aggregate counts, score sums and squared-score sums. Approximate 95% mean intervals are mean +/- 1.96 times SD divided by the square root of the group count. SD contrasts divide the older-minus-younger mean difference by the trait SD among all retained 20-69-year-olds of that gender, not the SD of just the two compared groups. This is not conventional pooled-group Cohen's d. The data are split reproducibly by profile identity; the discovery half fixes rankings and the holdout half checks consistency.
Interpretation. These are descriptive, unadjusted age-group means within recorded gender. Education, country, relationship status, test-taking selection and generational background are not controlled. No result establishes a causal effect of age or gender. Shared social networks and response tendencies can violate independence and make nominal intervals too narrow. Exploring many traits can also inflate standout differences; split-half checks reduce but do not remove that risk.
Bottom line: the charts describe how this historical sample differs across age groups. They do not show a universal life trajectory, predict an individual's future personality, or establish that one age or gender is better than another.
