Relative Height, Gender and Personality

Does describing yourself as tall go with other personality scores? These comparisons examine all participants together, men separately, and women separately. The item asked about being very tall for one's age and gender: it is a relative self-assessment, not a measurement in inches or centimetres.

No large personality separation

No high-versus-low height comparison among the 38 personality dimensions meets the predeclared substantial-difference screen, in the combined sample or either gender. The largest continuous associations are only about r = .12.

Men: attractiveness is the clearest association

High-height scorers score 7.4 points higher on self-rated attractiveness than low-height scorers after age/status adjustment (0.39 SD; r = +.117). This is self-perception paired with self-perception, not evidence that height causes attractiveness.

Women: wealth and competence lead

Self-rated wealth (r = +.119; +5.3 points) and competence/superiority (r = +.117; +6.1 points) are the largest continuous associations. Neither reaches a half-SD high/low gap.

Gender remains relevant to the measure

Despite wording relative to age/gender peers, men average 45.1 and women 33.8 on the height score. Pooled raw associations can therefore mix within-gender patterns with differences in how the groups answer.

Diverging bars compare high-minus-low score gaps across everyone, men, and women. Exact estimates appear in the tables below.

How to Read These Comparisons

High and low are score bands, not population percentiles. High means 75-100 on the focal item, low means 0-25. Intermediate scores are omitted only from the high/low contrasts; correlations use every retained profile.

Raw r is the Pearson correlation before adjustment. Age-adjusted r removes quadratic approximate age and recorded gender, with gender-by-age interactions. Full r also removes relationship-category terms and gender-by-category interactions. The men-only and women-only fits are separate and adjust age and status without a gender term. Status may be intertwined with the focal measure; neither adjustment identifies a causal effect.

Adjusted gap is the high-minus-low difference in mean outcome residuals after the full adjustment, in 0-100 score points. It is not a percentage increase. SD gap divides that gap by the outcome's SD in the entire relevant gender cohort, not just the two extreme groups. It is not conventional pooled-group Cohen's d. Raw low/high means remain available in the complete tables.

Substantial-gap screen: at least 500 people per side in each deterministic split half; |SD gap| at least 0.50 overall and 0.40 in each half, with the same direction. The separate continuous screen is |full r| at least .25 overall and .23 in both halves, with the same direction. These are effect-size filters, not significance tests, and are not universal cutoffs for importance. Both halves are from the same historical sample, not independent external validation.

Coverage: 135,982 adult profiles with recorded male/female metadata and approximate age 18-80, from 253,717 valid stored profiles. The common cohort excludes missing or implausible adult age, missing male/female metadata, invalid/all-50 profiles, and split-by-gender-by-age-band-by-status cells below 30 people (259 otherwise eligible adult profiles). No other gender categories can be examined from this extract. All 40 other stored dimensions are retained for each focal item, including 38 personality dimensions and the other two single-item measures.

Limits: self-selected historical users, self-report measurement, potential shared response tendencies, and social-network dependence. Birth year may have been inferred from graduation; its provenance is not marked. Relationship metadata may have updated independently of testing. The wealth, weight, height, competence, and attractiveness scores are self-ratings, not objective measurements. The attractiveness scale partly refers to opposite-sex attention, which complicates attraction-group interpretation. No correction for a broad response factor is performed here.

Historical tests: April 26, 2008 to October 19, 2011. Aggregate-only extraction; no names, contact details or individual answers exported.
