Political Orientation and Personality

Which personality differences distinguish self-described political groups? A historical Facebook questionnaire sample compares all 38 dimensions after accounting for age and gender, emphasizing the size and consistency of the differences rather than statistical significance alone.

Group averages are not individual judgments. Political labels do not determine a person's personality. This self-selected historical sample is not representative of today's electorate. Age/gender adjustment cannot remove country, culture, education or other background differences, and the associations do not establish that political views cause personality differences.

The Largest Adjusted Differences

11 of the 38 dimensions have at least one comparison meeting the substantial-gap and split-half screen. There are 80 qualifying pairwise contrasts, but they overlap and are correlated, not independent discoveries.

Religious faith

Conservative has an adjusted mean of 68.4, compared with 31.0 for Very liberal. The difference is +37.4 score points, or +1.23 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +1.23 and +1.23 SD; sample sizes are 3,257 and 2,537.

Religious faith is a separate measured dimension here, not a component used to assign political labels. Its association with politics does not show that faith causes political orientation, or vice versa.

Humanitarian concern

Very liberal has an adjusted mean of 67.6, compared with 51.1 for No political views. The difference is +16.5 score points, or +0.86 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +0.86 and +0.87 SD; sample sizes are 2,537 and 1,072.

This reflects responses to humanitarian-concern items, not an objective ranking of moral worth or actual charitable behavior.

Intellectual interests

Libertarian has an adjusted mean of 62.7, compared with 47.8 for No political views. The difference is +14.9 score points, or +0.84 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +0.85 and +0.83 SD; sample sizes are 1,617 and 1,072.

Intellectual interests is a self-reported interest dimension, not a test of IQ or cognitive ability.

Artistic interests / creativity

Very liberal has an adjusted mean of 63.9, compared with 48.1 for Very conservative. The difference is +15.7 score points, or +0.66 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +0.77 and +0.55 SD; sample sizes are 2,537 and 424.

Desire to be different

Very liberal has an adjusted mean of 58.5, compared with 47.2 for Very conservative. The difference is +11.3 score points, or +0.59 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +0.73 and +0.46 SD; sample sizes are 2,537 and 424.

Preference for familiarity

Very conservative has an adjusted mean of 55.1, compared with 44.1 for Very liberal. The difference is +10.9 score points, or +0.60 cohort SD. Discovery and holdout gaps are +0.68 and +0.53 SD; sample sizes are 424 and 2,537.

How Much Do Political Labels Explain Overall?

Extreme differences between two groups can coexist with substantial individual overlap. To assess overall explanatory strength, a model containing age/gender terms alone is compared with a model that also includes the political label groups.

Both models are fitted in the discovery half and evaluated on the holdout half without refitting. The percentage below is the reduction in squared prediction error relative to the age/gender-only baseline, not the percentage of a trait caused by politics.

The Democrat and Republican groups include their corresponding party labels, but do not establish verified US party membership. Democratic alone and separately named foreign parties are not automatically assigned to them.
Independent remains separate from the Independence Party of America. Other is only an explicit unspecified response, not a catch-all for unrecognized labels and not a coherent ideology.
Apolitical remains distinct from Don't care. It has fewer than 300 raw profiles and is not part of the modeled groups. Blank, N/A, candidates, slogans, mixed or uncertain labels are not silently assigned an ideology.

The combined categories are analysis definitions, not claims that every original label is an exact synonym. Country, ideology and party membership can carry different meanings in different settings.

Methods and Limits

Adjustment. A joint ordinary-least-squares model is fitted for each of 38 traits: one intercept per political group, recorded gender, centered age, age squared, gender-by-age and gender-by-age-squared. The model permits different quadratic age curves for men and women, but assumes common age/gender slopes across political groups. Each adjusted mean is standardized to the same full modeled cohort distribution.

Effect sizes. Differences are divided by the trait SD among all 33,797 modeled profiles, not a pairwise pooled Cohen's d. A contrast passes the substantial-gap screen with at least 0.50 SD overall and at least 0.40 SD in both split halves in the discovery-selected direction, as well as the group sample-size requirements. These descriptive thresholds are not universal definitions of practical importance or significance tests.

Discovery and holdout. A deterministic profile-level split fixes two halves before models are fitted. The discovery half selects contrasts and their direction; the second half checks consistency within the same historical source. Selecting extreme pairs can inflate rankings. Correlated traits and overlapping comparisons are not independent discoveries, and split-half consistency does not eliminate cultural confounding.

Sample and timing. Profiles have a stored test date on or after April 26, 2008, all 41 stored scores between 0 and 100, and at least one score different from the all-50 default. Approximate age is test year minus stored birth year; some birth years may have been inferred from graduation. Political metadata may have been collected or updated independently of the test. Each stored profile counts once; retake history is unavailable. Group/split aggregates below 30 profiles are suppressed.

Measures. These are self-report questionnaire dimensions, not diagnoses or objective measurements of ability, health or behavior. Intellectual interests is not IQ; self-rated financial wealth is not observed income or assets. Alcohol/tobacco combines behavior and attitudes, not a clinical diagnosis. The separate height, same-gender-attraction and music items are outside the 38 dimensions analyzed here. Completed individual item responses are not retained in this historical database.

Interpretation. The sample is historical and self-selected, not representative of current voters or political groups. Age/gender adjustment does not control for country, language, education, socioeconomic background, religious affiliation, relationship status, broad response style or social-network dependence. Political labels are self-entered and not verified membership or voting behavior. These associations do not establish causality and do not support judging an individual's personality, worth or affiliation from a group average.
